Steve O'Connell, GLA Member for Sutton & Croydon took the opportunity of a visit to Sutton to view the new buses, based on the old Routemaster type that will be running on routes in London later this year.
The first prototype new bus for London was unveiled by the Mayor of London in Trafalgar Square on 16 December. This vehicle is currently undertaking a short borough tour ahead of it entering passenger service on Monday, 20 February.
The tour will give the public an opportunity to get a closer look and even board the bus and view the interior. The bus was on public display in Millennium Square, Sutton on Saturday 7th January 2012. The buses will operate on route 38 between Victoria and Hackney. The prototype vehicles will enter service from 20 February 2012, and by May 2012 eight will be in service.
There are three sets of doors on the bus to make it easier to get on and off, each with Oyster card readers. Inside there are two staircases, one near the front and one at the back, for easy access to and from the upper deck.
Said Steve O'Connell, "Proof that Boris keeps his promises. He said he'd ban the hated bendy bus, and bring back the beloved Routemaster, even greener than before. And there it is, the proof of the pudding, in our High Street."
